A List of the Top Things You Can Do in Sri Lanka

The country of Sri Lanka may not be as popular a tourist destination as, say, India or Thailand, but it has a lot to offer regarding cultural sights and historical attractions, palm-fringed beaches and waterfalls, culinary delights, and wonderful, friendly people. That is probably why Sri Lanka is fast becoming one of the go-to places for tourists from all over the world, and what’s more, it’s not as expensive as other top tourist spots, either. If you’re looking for a destination that’s beautiful and yet a bit off-the-beaten-track, then Sri Lanka may be the destination for you. Would you like to take the holiday of a lifetime, a holiday that’s unique and memorable in every way? Here are the top things you can do in Sri Lanka.

Explore the country by train

If you want to travel around Sri Lanka without breaking the bank and see some of the most stunning sights at the same time, you should explore the country by train. The Sri Lankan railway traverses through the loveliest scenery and stops at popular destinations such as Hatton, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya. Nuwara Eliya, by the way, is where you can take a hike to the secret waterfalls – and on the way, you’ll go through gorgeous valleys and vegetable farms and get to experience the jungle firsthand. Trekking to the Nuwara Eliya falls is undoubtedly one of the unique things to do on holiday in Sri Lanka.

Climb a UNESCO World Heritage site

When it comes to ancient structures and spectacular architecture, Sri Lanka can contend with tourist favourites such as Angkor Wat in Cambodia and the Taj Mahal in India. It has its very own Sigiriya, a structure built as far back as 1,600 years ago. It’s arguably the most famous monument in Sri Lanka, and all you have to do is hike up to the top (it takes a mere 60 to 90 minutes) and, on the way, be amazed at the striking frescoes and gardens. At the summit, you will reach the majestic Sky Palace, which rests on a huge (and high) rock measuring 200 metres in height.

Visit the elephants at Minneriya National Park

Everyone seems to agree that the elephant gathering at Minneriya National Park is the largest in Asia. The gathering of elephants at the park takes place from July to October. Since this is the dry season, animals all over the area come to drink at the reservoir in Minneriya. The number of elephants at each gathering can reach up to 300 – indeed an astounding sight.

Go snorkelling at Pigeon Island

Pigeon Island is said to be one of the most perfect, beautiful beaches in the country. It is at the northern portion of Trincomalee, and it is part of the broader expanse known as the Pigeon Island National Park. You can still see the pigeons which have given the island its name, but the best bit is getting a chance to snorkel off the beautiful shoreline and spot numerous tropical fish and coral.

Of course, there are still many things you can do in Sri Lanka – you can go rafting and kayaking on the Mahaweli River, you can go on a hike in the famous hill country, and you can even go cycling to Kataragama. Many tours are specialising in these activities in Sri Lanka, and all you have to do is find the right one.
